As a studio owner for thirteen years, I have found that different people look for different things in an instructor. All things stated above are all things I ask and agree with. I and my studio, Mind Your Body in NYC, are PMA members. I generally hire teachers who have either had a dance career or have been teaching for a while.
I also like to ask the client a few questions to understand whether she needs work that is rehabilitating, more intense traditional Pilates or does she/he need a place to work out that is private..... All of these factors help to give a client what they are looking for and keeps her satisfied. While working with an individual, I may introduce concepts I believe would be beneficial in helping her reach her ultimate goals.
