Bagoas Belly Dancing: An Amazing Display of Core Strength, Ab Work, Rhythm, & Flowing Movement

Can Your Abs Do This?

A friend of mine who is an avid belly dancer shared this video with me.  I have to say, gender is irrelevant.  Bagoas know who Bagoas is!  Whether you are male or female…  Can Your Abs do this?

The Pilates Mind-Body Connection – Unconscious vs. Conscious Awareness for Pilates Training & Life!

How much time throughout the day do you spend consciously aware of what you’re doing? Is it a couple of minutes, an hour, or most of your day?  Or is it hardly ever?

A few years ago, I was working with one of my Pilates students, who had been training with me for quite a while, but never seemed to remember anything that we were doing.  He had a routine, but I had to  tell him every little detail, from the name of the exercise to how to do it, breath patterns, and equipment set up.  Every workout felt like we were starting from scratch – he acted like he’d never seen the exercises before – and this had been happening on EVERY exercise for years!

While I usually am very patient with my students, one day I had a moment of utter frustration…  and blurted out, “You know that Pilates is a mind-body exercise program, and using your mind means that you should know your exercises and the order you do them in for  your Pilates workout program!”

He looked at me and said, “But I’ve always exercised so that I don’t have to think.” (As was obvious by our “Groundhog Day” experience during our Pilates sessions)

But think about how many people  you see walking, running, swimming, lifting weights, or other fitness activities with their headphones on tuned into their music or favorite TV show with no awareness of body mechanics, support, or efficient movement technique.

And then something miraculous happened…

Can I Do Pilates While I’m In PT?

I found this great question in my inbox today, and thought that I’d share my reply here on my Pilates blog.

“I have sustained a recent back injury, I am still going through physical therapy.  I am wondering when can a person safely sign up  for some pilates individualized sessions with an instructor and about how much would it cost?  I have never done pilates before and only became interested since some of the exercises are the same as the ones I am learning in pt.”

ACSM Fitness Trends – Pilates Ranks High for 2010

The American College of Sports Medicine recently published a forecast of fitness trends for 2010, and it’s wonderful to see that Pilates training is near the top of the list!

While Pilates was ranked #9 in the ACSM report, by my assessment of the top ten fitness trends it appears to me that many, if not all, are distinctly related to Pilates training.  In fact I can see application of the Pilates system and Pilates principles for whole-body health to every single one of the top trends.

Body Awareness, Exercise Safety, and the Potential Pitfalls of a Bad Personal Trainer

Exercise - Health and Fitness TrainingI have to say that I am grateful for my gymnastics, dance, and Pilates training – especially in regards to body awareness.  I’m sure it’s why so many dancers and athletes are embracing Pilates as a component of their injury-prevention and cross-training program.  And it makes sense why so many of my clients over the years have started Pilates, because of an injury or problem that limited their ability to participate in general exercise programs.  I feel blessed and fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with great coaches, teachers, trainers and mentors, but I know that not everybody out there has had the same experience.

The old saying, “You can’t fix it if it ain’t broke…”  Well if you’re not aware of what you’ve been doing to “break” it – how could “fixing” it even begin to solve the problem.  The first “fix” has got to be with the mind-body connection and improved body awareness, or old bad habits will be impossible to break.

Regardless of your athletic  or dance background, or how old you were when you started your first exercise program, or what physical shape your body is in – it’s never too late to improve your health AND strengthen your mind-body connection!  It just takes the desire to work on it – and a good coach to guide you along the way!

6 Ways To Help Your Clients Stick with Their Pilates Workout Program

I was eating lunch today and talking shop with one of my Centerworks-trained, PMA Certified Pilates teachers,  and we ended up on the topic of:   How to effectively get clients enthusiastic about Pilates, AND keep them signing up for lessons so we can really help them see the benefits Pilates has to offer.

So I had to put on my thinking cap and work through what I’ve done in the past 25 years as a health professional, and particularly in the last 15 years as a Pilates teacher to motivate my clients to stay committed to their exercise program.  I feel very fortunate that I’ve always had a very busy training schedule and most of my clients have been with me forever.  Well maybe not forever, but some clients have been consistent for well over 10 years, and my most recent clients have been enrolled for at least 3-5 years!

Everyone that has stuck with it has been with me since they started.  Now I realize that the last sentence seems kind of funny….but that IS the real question!

WHY have they stuck with it???

And how do we get more people to experience, enjoy, and continue with a long-term wellness program?

If you’re a Pilates teacher, personal trainer, or parent these principles will apply!  If you’re a client – struggling to stay on the exercise bandwagon, you can easily apply this information to your workout program too.
