Happy New Year – 2013
is the Year
of the Water Snake
While I’m not an expert with Chinese Astrology, I am fascinated at how the Universe brings things to my attention.
Today, February 10th at 3:20pm we begin the Year of the Water Snake.
What I didn’t realize until researching the meaning of a recent dream about water snakes, is that:
- We’re moving out of the year of the Dragon, and into the year of the Water snake.
- This is the first year of the dawning of the age of Aquarius – which began on December 22, 2012, (the first day of the new Mayan calendar based on it’s long count of 5, 125 years.)
- It’s a powerful time of rebirth and new cycles!
Seems to me a special time for us to BE celebrating life on this earth!

Taking time daily to practice meditation is a great way to improve your health. Daily meditation can help reduce stress, release tension, relax, re-energize, and renew your mind, body, and Spirit.
Challenged to find time to mediate? It can be something as short as 5-10 focused breaths, or 30 seconds to 1 minute with a quiet mind. Or you can indulge in 15, 30, 45, or 60 minutes of stress relieving time in your day to meditate.
Don’t have time daily? Make time! The long-term health benefits for your body will be worth it. Perhaps some days it’s a short-quick meditation, and other days you give yourself more time.
Consistent daily meditation can help you maintain a sense of inner peace, balance, and live in a stress-free zone.

Meditation for health enhancement is a mind-body practice that has been used for thousands of years in Eastern religious and spiritual traditions. Generally speaking, meditation is a way of clearing the mind of distracting thoughts and emotions to increase physical relaxation, mental calmness, clarity, and psychological balance.
There are many different techniques that can be used to practice meditation.
Some techniques focus attention on a word, object or the breath to assist in removing distraction and increasing focused attention. Meditation can be done in stillness, or movement. Pilates, Yoga, Tai-Chi, and Qi Gong are all forms of “Moving Meditation.
Most types of Meditation have these four things in common:
- A quiet, distraction-free environment (free of phones, pets, and other interruptions)
- A comfortable posture (seated, standing, lying down, walking…)
- Focused attention (on a mantra, object, or breathing)
- A open attitude to let distracting thoughts go, and working towards stillness of the “monkey-mind.”
(The constant barrage of thoughts and distractions that pop into our head and create unnecessary stress to the physical, emotional, and spiritual body.)
There are hundreds of wonderful health benefits to practicing daily meditation!
(Even if it’s only 10-20 minutes a day!)
Here are just a few:
- Improve overall health
- Reduce stress and anxiety
- Decreases muscle tension
- Improves physical relaxation
- Enhances the immune system
- Helps with weight loss
- Helps focus and concentration
- Increases productivity
- Increases feelings of vitality and rejuvenation
- Provides peace of mind
- Builds self-confidence
- Brings body, mind and spirit into harmony
- And many, many more wonderful health and wellness benefits!
Meditation is a simple, economical way to improve your health!
- It’s a skill that’s easy to learn
- Can be practiced anywhere
- Requires no special equipment
- Has no negative side effects

I read an article the other day and it said, “Pilates isn’t a mind-body exercise in the meditative way that Yoga, Tai Chi, or Qi Gong are, but it does use your mind to influence and improve your body.”
[poll id=”4″]It seems evident to me that this author has probably never experienced a Pilates workout! And in my study of Pilates, Yoga, Tai Chi, Qi Gong, and meditation, I believe that these great mind-body methods are more similar than one might think for improving whole-body health.
All have underlying principles & philosophies behind the exercises. And even meditation (sitting still) is an exercise!
Each Mind-Body method has a system of utilizing the breath, and specific breathing patterns to improve technique and maximize benefits from your practice.
All require, concentration, coordination, and improve whole-body health, balance, and body control.
It’s not just, let’s move the body, but let’s be aware, in-tune, and conscious of what we’re doing, how, we’re doing it, the initiation point, end point, and in-between points for every movement.
I think it’s wonderful that we have options for focused fitness and enhanced wellness for improved mind-body health. There is a method out there to help meet the needs of each of us as individuals. And if you want to develop and fine-tune your skills, cross-training and exploring different mind-body methods may give you an increased appreciation for your body, health, and the ancient wisdom that is at the root of each of these techniques.

A good friend recommended the book Autobiography of a Yogi, by Paramahansa Yogananda to me a while ago, and I’ve been slowly working my way through it! It is an excellent read for anyone interested in a life story filled with exceptional information about the spiritual journey of a man, and Yogi, and religious insights for health, wellness, and enlightenment.
I have personally gleaned many little gems of information that have added deeper dimensions of perspective and awareness to my life, and I’m only half-way through the book on my first read. Some books I don’t care to read more than once, this book I look forward to reading again, but with a pen and highlighter in hand next time through so I can mark the passages and insights that have relevance to my life that it would be great to quickly find for reference and review.
I have not done much yoga in my life yet, nor am I completely up to speed on the culture and religious values of the people of India, but this book is inspiring me to want to learn more and perhaps discover new insights for my life’s journey to higher states of enlightenment and a deeper connection to my spiritual self.
I can see some of the points of perspective that Joseph H. Pilates may have taken from his studies of Yoga and Eastern Philosophies that have been incorporated into the Pilates Method, system, and exercises. And although the spiritual aspect of Pilates is not discussed much, I do know for me, as my mind-body awareness and physical health has improved with the practice of Pilates, there has been a positive shift and uplift of my spirit too!
I am looking forward to finishing this book, AND then starting again from the beginning for a second read. Perhaps the Autobiography of a Yogi will even inspire me to delve into a bit more Yoga and perhaps add some Yoga training to my lifestyle for added growth of my spiritual and physical health and wellness… It will be interesting to see what evolves!

I recently started taking a Yoga meditation class to deepen my connection to center!
While Pilates exercises are excellent as a form of moving meditation to focus on feeling and activating the energy flow throughout the body, it’s also important to find that still, quiet place for rest, rejuvenation, and contemplation on well – absolutely nothing, but altogether everything!
One of the biggest challenges with a meditation practice is learning how to quiet the mind and just be in stillness without the distraction of thoughts, feelings, and emotions. There are hundreds, perhaps thousands of different ways to meditate and probably just as many techniques to assist in centering one’s focus.
This week I learned the benefits of the words Soham, and using So Ham as a mantra for Yoga meditation.
